Breathe Beauty Bar to open Saturday in downtown Detroit

Owner promises 'beauty spa with a bar appeal'

By Blake Froling  Comments Email PrintDetroit Entrepreneurship Retail ServicesPhoto by Breathe BeautyMonica Moore-Brown developed her all-natural line of products because of her daughter's severe eczema. Now she is opening a beauty bar in downtown Detroit.Breathe Beauty Bar, a boutique spa with a juice bar, is set to open 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Detroit with a guest host: actress Vivica A. Fox, a family friend. This is the first store for owner Monica Moore-Brown, a graduate of theTechTown Retail Boot Camp.Moore-Brown launched a line of all-natural beauty products in 2011, which includes body butter, sugar scrub, lotion, body wash, deodorant and hand sanitizer, priced from $6-$40. She said necessity drove her to develop these products because her daughter had severe eczema and normal products made it worse. So Moore-Brown started making her own products and ended up with Breathe Beauty. What makes her products all-natural is the use, and exclusion, of certain ingredients. Most products include ingredients such as emu oil, aloe vera, coconut oil, vitamin E oil and sweet almond oil. What she doesn't include is alcohol and aluminum."When I thought about what I wanted to do next with the Breathe brand, I knew I wanted to bring something different to Detroit and provide an experience for my clients," Moore-Brown said in a news release. The 2,200-square-foot store in the Julius C. Madison Building at 1420 Washington Blvd. cost her $32,000 to build out. She received funding from the Detroit Development Fund and the Michigan Women's Foundation, which awarded her $88,000; the boot camp awarded her a point-of-sale system and accounting software. Together these covered her startup costs completely.Moore-Brown promises a unique experience with customers receiving spa services while at the juice bar, boosting the social experience. She calls it Michigan's "first beauty spa with a bar appeal."The spa will offer services such as manicures, pedicures, facials, makeup, brows, lashes and massages. Party and membership packages are also available.

Natural Beauty Spa and Juice Bar to Open in Downtown Detroit

The Breathe Beauty Bar product lineBreathe Beauty Bar, a natural beauty spa and juice bar, will open Saturday on the second floor of the Julian C. Madison building in downtown Detroit, just south of the David Whitney Building and the Aloft Hotel.“I wanted to bring something a little different than just the average day spa,” says Monica Brown, owner and founder of Breathe Beauty Bar. “I wanted it to have the feel of a bar — social, but you’re still getting pampered. Everything is all-natural, even down to the products we use for your nails.”Services at the 2,200-square-foot beauty bar, located at 1420 Washington Blvd., include massages, 30-minute express facials, manicures, regular and steam pedicures, full makeup services, lashes and lash extensions, and brow tinting. Various juices also will be available for purchase.“I feel that we can service a lot of the apartments and hotels that don’t have a spa, and incorporate some of the businesses that will come down here,” Brown says. She says a bar in the center of the space serves as the focal point, complemented by a lounge that includes seating, tall tables, the juice bar, and retail products. There are also two massage rooms with high ceilings and chandeliers.“We’d like to have a mobile beauty bar in the future in maybe six to nine months so that we can cover events in the downtown area, and even go to homes so that you can have pampering services there,” Brown says.  “We also want to open up several more beauty bars and create a franchise in the next year.”She says a natural, nine-product beauty line she created for her daughter who has eczema inspired the business. She turned the product line into a full-service beauty bar when she attended Detroit-based TechTown’s Retail Boot Camp, which connected her with the Detroit Development Fund and Michigan Women’s Foundation.
